Managed Payments Overview

What does it mean to manage payments?

It means that eBay will manage the end-to-end payments experience on the eBay platform. Buyers will be able to complete their purchases on eBay, and sellers will be paid directly to their bank accounts. eBay works with a partner to facilitate this process.

Why have you decided to manage payments?

We believe this is an opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience for both buyers and sellers, while offering a greater choice in payment and payout options.

I'm a seller, is there anything I need to do right now?

No, you do not need to take any action at this time. If you are eligible for the initial launch of the new payments experience, you will receive an email invitation to participate.

Do I or my buyers have to sign up with a new payment provider?

No. With eBay managing payments, you’ll use an eBay account to sell, and you’ll need to provide a bank account into which you will be paid, rather than a relationship with both eBay and a payment provider. Like any other online retailer, buyers can choose how they'd like to pay and the processor will not be visible to them.

If I receive an invitation to register for managed payments, what should I do?

We recommend that you consider the benefits of managed payments and register when you are ready. Managed payments at the US site is now live with a small group of sellers who were invited to opt in, based on best fit. These sellers now receive payouts directly to a bank account they specify, so there is no need to manually transfer funds. The overall experience is for sellers to manage all their selling and payment activities in one place on eBay, and have a single company to contact for support and service. This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of being an early adopter as well as help influence the future of managed payments at eBay. We are planning for the next wave in 2019, and full global roll out starting 2020.

I have multiple eBay accounts. Will I be able to register for managed payments with a different account from the account in which I received the email invitation?

Although the managed payments invitation is only valid for the account associated with the email address in which you received the email invitation, upon request, we will also review other accounts on an individual basis.

I didn't receive an invitation to register for managed payments. How will the rollout affect me?

If you didn't receive an invitation, we will contact you when you are eligible to register. We are limiting registrations during our initial rollout. If you’re interested in participating in managed payments, express your interest here.

What are my options if managed payments isn't right for my business now?

We are moving to a future where we will manage payments for all sellers on our platform. As sellers transition to our new payments experience, they will benefit from further product improvements and innovations. That said, we understand that every situation is unique, and we have developed a path for sellers to flag any issues or raise concerns with our Customer Support team to determine the best path forward for their business.

What does this mean for my seller fees?

You will receive low pricing on payments processing fees. All sellers will also benefit from a consolidated billing structure and more visibility to sales and payouts. You will see a new line item for payments processing fees on your monthly eBay invoices alongside your standard eBay selling fees. Opting in to managed payments would mean opting in at the offered rate.

When and how can I get my payouts?

To get paid, you’ll need to add a bank account to your eBay seller account. You’ll get paid directly to your bank account, regardless of which payment option the buyer selects. If you sell daily, you will receive regular payouts into your bank account. From your bank account, you can access your funds directly. There’s no need to transfer funds between accounts. Depending on your bank, you can typically expect payouts to be sent to your bank account within 2-4 business days of an order confirmation. We aim to pay you as fast as possible, but are dependent on the credit card brands (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) and banks for payout processing and timely funds settlement. We are currently looking into ways for our sellers to have more options and faster access to their funds.

Current forms of payment

What forms of payments are now available to buyers who would like to purchase from managed payments sellers?

Buyers can currently safely and securely purchase from managed payments sellers with credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, PayPal and PayPal Credit.?Buyers can complete their entire transactions on eBay, with the option to save and store their card information for future use. Their experience will be similar to that of other online retailers.

Buyers can use credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, PayPal and PayPal Credit on eBay, with the option to store their payment information for future use. Will I have to transfer my listings when my account is enabled for managed payments?

No. When we enable your account for managed payments, your existing eBay listings will be migrated to the new payment experience, which will reflect the different ways your buyers can pay for their purchases. You should not need to make any changes to your existing listings.

Will the Global Shipping Program be supported by the new managed payment experience?

We currently do not support the Global Shipping Program for sellers who have registered for managed payments. However, all non-US buyers can shop and pay on the US site as they do today. If they are buying from a seller opted in for managed payments, the non-US buyer can pay using credit or debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, or Discover) and you would ship internationally on your own.

How can I pay for my shipping labels in this new model?

Our current shipping label program will not change. You will still pay for USPS labels using PayPal. Charges for FedEx label purchases will appear on your monthly invoices from eBay.

Third-party Tools

I use third party tools to manage my business - will these integrations still work under managed payments?

If you use third party tools to manage listing, inventory and/or order management activities, there should be no change in how you use those tools when you enable managed payments. However, if you use a third-party tool to reconcile finances or issue partial refunds, these activities may not be supported yet with managed payments. Please contact your individual third party provider for questions specific to their service offerings.

Seller Protection

Will we have seller protection?

Yes, as long as your account is in good standing with eBay, you are eligible for seller protection. Seller protection from eBay is designed to help you safeguard your online sales and prevent you from losing money due to eBay Money Back Guarantee claims. How will claims and returns work?

In the managed payments model, you will contact eBay for support and service on claims and returns. eBay will offer buyers the capability to submit disputes and claims through the eBay resolution center for most situations. Having resolutions centralized will provide better visibility to you in managing claims and disputes. In the majority of claims, returns and refunds, eBay will continue to follow existing policies, and refunds will be returned to the original payment method used at time of purchase.
